K-9 Training Programs
for Law Enforcement

Basic Training Program for New Canine/Handler Teams

The Basic Training Program is intended for new dog-handler teams with little or no previous training for police service. Prior to the start of any practical field training a three hour lecture will be offered to familiarize the handler with canine psychology, behavior, care and maintenance,and other related topics.
This lecture course will include a demonstration of the Der Hundeplatz canine performance standards test in addition to the POST standards.After the initial orientation session regularly scheduled training sessions will begin, with emphasis on the practical field training necessary for certification: tracking, obedience, protection, building search, evidence search and area search.Training sessions will be conducted three times weekly, three hours per session, over a period of ten weeks (90 hrs.) At the completion of this program the dog-handler team will be POST certified street-ready. No more than 3 dog-handler teams may be enrolled in the Basic Training Program concurrently.


Police Canine Maintenance
Training Program

The Maintenance Training Program is designed to maintain top levels of proficiency for dog-handler teams already in service. This program includes bi-annual testing of teams in conformance with POST standards. 
Maintenance training sessions will be coordinated to allow each dog-handler team to remedy specific performance problems (failure to release, insufficient barking, false indications, etc.) Maintenance training sessions will be conducted at least 2 times monthly, at various locations over varied terrain with a variety of distractions. These sessions shall be 5 hours in duration . No more than 5 dog-handler teams per session. Individual training sessions may be scheduled on a regular basis, or on short notice as training problems may develop.
